Palestinian Economics 101
The Israeli-Palestinian conflict is most frequently seen through the lens of security and national identity, but as unfolding economic crises in nearby Lebanon and Turkey show, the policies governing inflation, interest rates, foreign exchange rates, employment levels, and economic growth in a variety of sectors are some of the most consequential actions a government is entrusted with by its people. Palestinians, however, do not have a fully sovereign government, and most of their economic policy is set by the Israeli and Jordanian governments. What are the  key drivers of the Palestinian economy, how do they inform Palestinian wellbeing, and how do they relate to the regional economic and security picture? What are the peculiar obstacles for the Palestinian economy, and how do these impact Israelis, Palestinians, and Jordanians? What can we learn from the case of the Palestinian economy about the value and key elements and impacts of economic self-governance in contexts of conflict?

In Part I of this series, Palestinian Economics 101, IPF Atid lay leaders will set the stage for this important conversation, as well as gather input from the greater Israel Policy Forum community. Members of the IPF Atid D.C. Steering Committee will provide an overview of the Palestinian economic situation, and why it’s important to consider economics within the context of a lasting two-state solution, as well as what questions this series will strive to answer in its later sessions with economic, development, and political experts.

This event is meant to be an introduction to a topic that is often left out of geopolitical discussions, but is incredibly consequential to a lasting peace process, and will provide the foundation for deeper conversations of Palestinian economic sectors, currency and trade policies, regional economic trends, and the political and practical role economic policy plays in the establishment and stability of a state.
